BOOR FISHERFOLKS RECEIVE 10 MOTORIZED FISHING BOATS UNDER DILP

The Department of Labor and Employment Rizal Provincial Office (DOLE RPO) awarded 10 fiberglass motorized fishing boats amounting PhP 853,406 to Boor Fisher Folk Association (BOFISFA) under DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP) last September 29. An estimated total of 101 fishermen of Boor will benefit from these 10 fishing boats.

Boor is one of the island barangays in Cardona located on the far-flung island of Talim. Being surrounded by bodies of water, fishing is the major source of livelihood of the community. Boor’s fishing grounds are always abundant with aquatic resources as different kinds of marine species thrive in the area.

Despite this, however, fisherfolk in Boor admitted that they could not afford the price to have their own fishing boats since most of them are subsistence fishermen and small-scale fishermen with low technology, low capital fishing practices undertaken by individual fishing households. For them to sail and catch fish, most of them resort to renting fishing boats. This is despite from the fact that they need to allot huge chunk of their earnings for rent expenses.

Because of this problem, Barangay Boor through the Local Government Unit of Cardona, aimed to provide sustainable employment to the local fishing community, seek the help of the Department by requesting fiberglass motorized fishing boats.

Aside from the provision of 10 fiberglass motorized fishing boats to BOFISFA, DOLE-RPO would also conduct livelihood capacity-building activities to equip the fisherfolk of Boor on the advanced fishing techniques, fishing boat maintenance, and proper ways to manage their fishing businesses. These activities would help the association to sustain their livelihood and improve their ways of fishing.
