The Department of Labor and Employment Quezon Provincial Office (DOLE QPO) had a back-to-back celebration of two important events recently. It has been said by the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns that there are around 500 thousand plus child laborers in the country today and in order to address this growing concern a concerted effort through awareness is needed among parents and different stakeholders from both government and the private sector.

This year, in order to intensify awareness, DOLE Quezon Provincial Office partnered with the Municipal Government of Sariaya for the celebration of the annual World Day Against Child Labor with the theme “Karapatan at Kalagayan ng Batang Manggagawa: Sagipin, Tugunan at Protektahan ng Bayan.” It was held on June 28, 2022 at the Agri Center along Sariaya Bypass Road.

Several activities were sponsored by the local government such as Poster Making Contest and parlor games for children who were profiled as child laborers in 2021. For poster making contest, seven consolation prizes of P500 each was given while P1,000 was awarded to the Third placer, P2,000 to the second placer and P3,000 to the First placer plus Realme C21Y cellphone donated by Peter Paul Philippines Corp. and P1,000 worth of load from DOLE Quezon. Likewise, the same amount and cellphone unit was also given to “people’s choice award” winner.


As to the parents of child laborers a lecture on Productivity and Simple Bookkeeping was given by Mr. Gener Rivera of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB IV-A) prior to the release of various livelihood packages which ranges from Bigasan to Bigasan and Sari-Sari Store projects. The said livelihood packages amount to P773,616.00 benefitting 26 parents.

On June 29, 2022 in celebration with the Labor Day for the Informal Workers, a capacity building was conducted by DOLE Quezon in partnership with the Municipal Government of Macalelon. A lecture on Organizational Development and Shared Leadership was facilitated by QPO Head Edwin T. Hernandez while Mr. Gener Rivera of the RTWPB IV-A conducted productivity seminar and also simple bookkeeping to former awardees of Bigasan and Sari Sari projects from the five ELCAC threatened barangays of Malabahay, Vista Hermosa, Ollongtao Ilaya, San Jose and San Vicente all in Macalelon, Quezon. In addition, former rebels from Mauban, Quezon were also among the participants of the said seminar which was assisted by the uniformed personnel of the 59th Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army under Lt. Col. Ernesto R. Teneza Jr.
