Batangas youngsters tidy coast to celebrate Working Youth Day

Jeeploads of youngsters, carrying black plastic bags, actively scoured a stretch of the shoreline of Brgy. Pagkilatan in Batangas City to pick up trashes washed ashore one sunny morning. The said youngsters were brought there to clean the coastline in celebration the 2011 Working Youth Day.

      The Department of Labor and Employment Batangas Provincial Office (DOLE BPO), which lead the celebration, was also joined by the Batangas City Council for Youth Affairs, the Federation of Sangguniang Kabataan and some locals in the coastal clean-up. The drive was facilitated by DOLE BPO to emphasize youths' responsibility in preserving the environment and the dignity of working for it.

      DOLE Batangas Provincial Director Aleta Frigillana said that the event served as a way of sharing and returning the services to the public as majority of the participants are recipients of DOLE's Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES). The activity made Pagkilatan shores lively that day.

      A forum on DOLE's Working Youth Center (WYC) Program was also held.  It was emphasized to the participants that the Program’s developmental objective is to develop them into future effective leaders, self-reliant and productive citizens.

       Observed during the forum were the motivation of the participants to be more active in their role as community and nation-builders. The youth-leaders even expressed their intention to organize and facilitate career coaching sessions for the local youth, in coordination with DOLE. Lovely Añonuevo, a youth-leader from nearby Brgy. Simlong, thanked DOLE for the activity and for the information shared to them which she said will help them pursue other milestones as youth leaders.

      The coastal clean-up was also supported by Batangas 2nd District Congressman Hermilando Mandanas, Batangas City Mayor Vilma Dimacuha, Brgy. Pagkilatan Chairman Robert Bagon, Batangas City Public Employment Service Office and the SK Federation.

      The Working Youth Day celebration is held annually in recognition of the indispensable role of youth in nation-building.
