A STEP CLOSER TO THEIR DREAMS: DOLE LPO INSPIRES WITH PROJECT ANGEL TREE

FUTURE POLICEMAN. Adriane receives goodies and school supplies during the celebration of World Day Against Child Labor in Laguna.

Ask him what he wants to be and he has a ready answer. “A policeman!” would be his quick reply. An incoming grade 7 pupil of Bgry. San Antonio, Pila, Laguna, Adriane shyly smiles for the camera while seated with classmates at the Multipurpose Barangay Hall of San Antonio, Pila, Laguna. But behind his boyish grin lies the turmoil and struggle of staying in school, his father working faraway in Quezon, his hard-earned wage barely keeping him and his mother survive each passing day at home.

While well-off kids enjoy shopping for school supplies with their parents, Adriane silently waits for school opening accustomed to make ends meet with whatever his mother was able to buy with what remained from his father’s income.

With summer ending, Adriane prepared himself for another school term, with nothing but his dream to get him by.

Then, something happened. He wondered how the stars knew of his dream, for the universe opened the doors for him.

DOLE Laguna Provincial Office through the coordinative efforts of SR LEO Raymond Ramos initiated anti-child labor advocacy in Bgry. San Antonio, Pila, Laguna. Meeting with local officials, the DOLE Laguna was able to identify fifty (50) schoolchildren at risk or exposed to child labor. In no time at all, Adriane and 49 others were invited at the Multipurpose Hall together with their grateful parents.

It was a hot day on 3 June 2017 but no one cared a bit. Staff from the barangay got busy preparing for the event as the Secretariat. DOLE personnel and representatives from sponsor companies arrived at the venue followed by local officials. With banners up and tarpaulins in place, Adriane and the other schoolchildren waited in excitement.

Part of the advocacy included a film showing of child laborers and orientation of the laws on anti-child labor. The barangay captain and town mayor were more than happy to welcome the DOLE and sponsors, a big help to the community. OIC-PD Guido R. Recio delivered an Inspirational Message to motivate not only the kids but also their parents hopeful that they are not alone in igniting the dreams of their innocent children.

School supplies were distributed as part of Project Angel Tree. The Laguna Labor ManagementCouncil, Inc. received educational assistance from generous corporate sponsors in cash and in kind which were distributed to schoolchildren. The initiative helps kids stay in school to become productive citizens in the future upon fulfillment of their life ambitions.

The gift-giving activity was held in commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labor with the theme, “In Conflicts and Disasters, Protect Children from Child Labour,” with the continued support of DOLE IV-A Regional Director Ma. Zenaida A. Angara-Campita.

As each child leaped in to get their bags of school supplies, they become a step closer to fulfilling their dreams.
