LUCENA CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment Region IV-A in its effort to reach the far flung areas of the region and address the soaring incidence of poverty organized a team that visited Polillo island in Quezon last April 2-4, 2019.

Polillo island is located about 29 kilometers off the eastern coast of Luzon. It is bounded by the municipality of Panukulan in the northwest and the municipality of Burdeos in the northeastern side of the island. Lamon Bay bounds it at the south, east and west. It can be reached by motorboats more or less three hours via Real - Polillo in the Ungos Port and a little bit shorter via Infanta-Polillo through Dinahican Fish Port.

Led by ARD Nepomuceno A. Leaño II, the team composed of Quezon Provincial Head Edwin T. Hernandez, Employment Focal Genecille P. Aguirre, Livelihood Alternate Focal Kim Daren Pabilonia, support staffs Ramil Malijan and Reggie Magbanua visited the municipalities of Burdeos and Polillo.

Among the package of assistance delivered to the island municipalities were the release of the 40% DOLE counterpart share to 158 SPES beneficiaries of Burdeos in the amount of P537,626.60 and career coaching and orientation of the next batch of SPES beneficiaries. Coinciding with the payout, ARD Leaño together with QPO Head Hernandez and Livelihood Focal Pabilonia visited the non-operational project of Burdeos funded by DOLE in 2015 under the Accelerated and Sustainable Anti-Poverty Program (ASAP). During the visit, DOLE IV-A personnel met with the private partner to discuss the status of the project and agreed on possible options to reinvigorate the same and the interest of the beneficiaries.

In the town of Polillo, the DOLE team turned-over to the local Chief Executive and the PESO Manager one set of PC that will be used by the Public Employment Service Office in all employment facilitation activities. In response, Mayor Cristina Bosque committed to institutionalize the PESO in their municipality. Likewise, an orientation for the new batch of SPES beneficiaries was also conducted by Employment Focal Genecille Aguirre and a forum with the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODA) of Polillo was facilitated by Mr. Kim Pabilonia to orient the officers on DOLE Kabuhayan and registration of workers association.
