SAP Rolls On: Tabasera Thanks DOLE
The 36-year old shows the check she received from DOLE

"Salamat sa tulong ng DOLE. Malaking bagay para sa aming pamilya ang aking natanggap. Makakapaggrocery ako at makakapagpaayos ng ilang bahagi ng aming bahay."

These were the words of Mrs. Rowena "Weng" Fajardo, the first Migratory Sugarcane Worker (MSW) who received a check worth Php 5000.00 at DOLE Balayan Extension Office last March 21, 2019. Such amount corresponds to her maternity benefit which is part of the Department's Social Amelioration Program.

Weng, The Tabasera

Weng, who hailed from San Narciso, Quezon, was a former "kasambahay" but due to the meager income she received and her maternal responsibility to look after her children, she decided to work as a sugarcane cutter with her husband. The tedious job often done by males workers was not new to her because since her childhood, she often saw and heard her "kabayans" from Quezon working at various sugarcane plantations.

After being frequently hired as sugarcane cutter at Balayan, Batangas for more than three years, she decided to permanently stay there with her family. It is then that DOLE-Batangas SAP Officer met her and informed her that she is qualified to avail for the maternity benefit considering that her second child is yet to turn two.

Her Story and DOLE's Intervention

As an MSW, Weng had difficulties in processing the requirements needed. In fact, her children did not yet have their birth certificates.

Given this, DOLE-Batangas SAP Officer explained to her the importance of the document and her obligation to register them. DOLE-Batangas SAP Officer also coordinated with Weng’s employer so that she may be assisted financially in processing such and complying with other requirements. Weng was likewise accompanied to the local civil registrar of Balayan to start the process of registration. After ten days, the birth certificates were released and the other requirements for maternity claim was completed and submitted for processing.

When her check was issued, DOLE-Batangas SAP Officer assisted Weng in looking for cash encashment entities in Balayan. Knowing that she does not have any ID to present, DOLE-Batangas SAP Officer talked to the manager of a mini-mart; explained Weng's case, and; assured the manager of the truthfulness and validity of the check.

The encashment was approved and Weng was thankful because DOLE's Social Amelioration Program looked after her all the way and took a pro-active stance of public service.
