DOLE Kabuhayan Program gives fresh hopes to displaced workers in Lucena City

The original Superman actor Christopher Reeve said “Once you choose hope, anything is possible.” This is how a group of women workers forcibly displaced by their employer in Lucena City hoped as they struggle and fought for better pay and good working condition.

The status of employment of these workers may be categorized as regular but the nature of their work as massage therapist who are sometimes on call and the manner of how their wages are paid may prove otherwise. Their demand for higher pay and improved working condition led to a series of labor dispute with their employer which eventually resulted to their displacement.

Julie, one of the displaced workers at first admitted their reservation when they took their complaint to DOLE accompanied by a staff of a well-known radio program because of its alleged biases in the administration of labor justice. However, that negative mindset began to change when DOLE Quezon swiftly addressed the workers concerns.

In support to the plight of the displaced workers, DOLE Quezon offered to provide alternative livelihood projects to mitigate the effect of sudden loss of income through its Kabuhayan program for individual beneficiaries. Each displaced worker was provided with Bigasan and Sari Sari Store project in the amount of not more than P20,000. In total, the amount of livelihood assistance released to the nine (9) beneficiaries is P167,502.

“Maraming salamat po sa DOLE sa inyong tulong pangkabuhayan, magagamit po namin ang mga panindang ito lalo ngayong panahon ng krisis upang kami ay mabuhay at makapag-simula muli,” uttered by one of the beneficiaries.

The livelihood assistance was facilitated by QPO alternate livelihood focal Mr. Kim Daren F. Pabilonia.
