PARENTS OF CHILD LABORERS IN LUCENA CITY GET P800K-WORTH OF LIVELIHOOD ASSISTANCE FROM DOLE QUEZON

“A child is meant to learn, not to earn.” This is how the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Quezon envisions the province - to be in the forefront with the fight for the total elimination of all forms of child labor.

In response, the City of Lucena, the only Highly Urbanized City in CALABARZON, through its City Mayor Roderick “Don Don” A. Alcala, signed a declaration of support to the campaign for the elimination of all forms of child labor in the city on October 12, 2020. The historic activity was witnessed by DOLE Quezon Head Edwin T. Hernandez, Lucena City PESO Manager Maria Cristina Encina and Lucena City Social Welfare and Development Officer Marilou Maralit.

As an initial step in the realization of the objectives of the signed Declaration, the city through its PESO assisted DOLE Quezon Community Facilitator Yvette Orfanel in the validation of the 2018 list of DOLE initiated profiling of child laborers. This aims to identify the most qualified beneficiaries to avail of the DOLE’s assistance.

Forty three (43) families of profiled child laborers were found qualified to avail of the DOLE Kabuhayan assistance. Majority of these families are from Barangays Dalahican, Talao Talao, Marketview, Ransohan, Ibabang Iyam, Mayao and Gulang Gulang. To ensure sustainability of their livelihood undertaking, PESO Lucena initiated the conduct of Financial Literacy which was held on October 2, 2020 with the first batch in Barangay Marketview and the second batch in Barangay Dalahican.

Coinciding with the signing of the Declaration by the City Chief Executive on October 12, 2020 is the release of Kabuhayan assistance to the parents of child laborers worth P810,026.00. Among the livelihood undertakings identified by the parent beneficiaries are small Bigasan store and sari-sari store.

The processing of the livelihood assistance was facilitated by DOLE QPO Child Labor Focal Kim Daren F. Pabilonia.
